Canberra and District Rugby League referees boss Chris Nightingale says the alleged incident where Cronulla players Andrew and David Fifita abused a junior referee is a “wake-up call”, and it’s up to clubs to send a strong message that it isn’t acceptable.
Speaking to the Canberra Times earlier this week, Nightingale said there has only been a handful of complaints of referee abuse this year but admitted it remains a huge struggle to retain referees long-term.
The Fifita brothers have been banned from Penrith junior rugby league games for a year and have been stood down by Cronulla, pending an investigation.
Nightingale didn’t wish to comment on the Fifita situation but said the fact the issue is again in the public sphere is a perfect time for the NRL to exert its authority.
